Talia Skolnick

Talia Skolnick is a fine artist who works with analogue photography, whereby the manual processing and dark room phases of creating images generates unexpected visual outcomes. Her work captures abstracted moments as subjects hide in plain sight and the images’ narrative and meanings depend entirely on what has been removed.

Talia’s lens-based works explore and promote the role of active looking through their absences and missing information. The physicality of Talia’s work is central to inviting viewers to look more closely at the world around them through her lens, compelling viewers to stop, interpret and contemplate.

In the words of Jacques Rancière, Talia’s work aims to ‘disrupt the sensible’ order through which one understands the world, making unseen elements visible and giving them unusual prominence. This is achieved through different levels of emphasis on shadow, light and form through the subject matter and materials used to fabricate her visuals.

As the images’ absences provoke deeper contemplation, the act of pausing and questioning creates room for alternate perspectives and new ways of seeing, prompting new meanings within familiar subjects.
