Summer Tait, a Leeds born and based artist, deliberately strays from narrative and structured meaning within her work. Summer’s practice serves as a meditative refuge, metaphorically as a conscious “shutting away” from the noise of thought to prioritise pure aesthetic experience, rather than reflecting internal conflict or social commentary.
Her medium of choice is alcohol inks as she finds them to be dynamic in nature as they capture the natural mixing of pigments as they dry which consequently enables the recording of the colours innate movements. The free-flowing ink serves as a visual record of a meditative state in which the hand leads and the mind follows, reflecting her personal path toward stillness and refuge.
The resulting components don’t necessarily need decoding; rather, Summer hopes they provide you with a peaceful anchor. By emphasising flowing shapes and vivid colour, she encourages viewers to abandon critical thinking in favour of just existing within the visual harmony of the piece and hopefully discovering the same tranquillity in the viewing as she does inside the creation of it.
