Livi Smith investigates the porous boundaries between humans, plants, animals and machines which are emerging from biotechnological developments. Through experimenting with biological material, her work explores our constantly evolving relations to living matter.
Inspired by theories of new materialism and posthumanism, her work considers the agency of matter in a rapidly developing world. She challenges the construction of the body as an independent entity, highlighting the complex entangled relations between both living and non-living entities.
Adopting structures and methods of display evoking the scientific and medical, she explores the anthropocentric attempt to contain and control living matter. Her installations create tension between these forces and the mutating entangled reality of living matter. By contrasting these forces, Livi highlights the fragile yet resilient nature of life.
