Our relationship with architecture is in a constant state of flux, with buildings continuously shifting in function. My practice interrogates the complex mobility of spaces through an exploration of material, capturing moments in a building’s lifespan through a site-responsive process. I translate methods of understanding form and tone into a sculptural investigation of the limitations and complexities of site-specific practice.
Through this translation, repeating motifs of draping have occurred. Draping, often used to conceal or reveal, allows the negative spaces of rooms to obtain a tactile quality, connecting elements of architecture I find engaging. These drapes are combined with a latex casting process, constructing a secondary skin of architecture. This material language, constructed from cloth and latex, allows my work to respond to specific locations and relocation.
Exploring spaces outside my studio enables me to engage a dual creative impulse. One side involves working site-specifically, combining my technique of latex and cloth draping with found elements of the architectural site. A secondary element of my practice involves the relocation of my installations to a contemporary gallery setting, exploring how the nature of sculpture shifts when materials are displaced from their context, challenging the capabilities of site-specific practice.
